On 6-3-95, the Metallica Club got Jason Newsted online to talk with us fans, here are the transcripts.

This was originally three seperate private chats with Jason Newsted. However, to save space, they have been combined into one file.

Again, these have been edited to make it a little easier to read.

JessUM: Hi Jason... are you contributing more writing on the new disc and if not.. why not?

MET CLUB: Yes, I am by God!

Tuturuku: Besides the usual privacy invasion due to fame, what else has fame cost you, Jason?

MET CLUB: My sanity.

GOSHEN400: Any singing on the side, spare time?

MET CLUB: All of the time.. many side projects.

Moviegal: Hi Jason, will you be singing lead on any songs on the new album?

MET CLUB: I'll be singing it, just don't know if they will be recording it.

BREADFAN 9: When is the next tour going to start, late this year or sometime next year?

MET CLUB: After the release of the new disc.. sometime next year.

Orion 8386: Hey Jasun --What B-sides (cover tunes) will we see on the singles released off the album this time?

MET CLUB: We have a few in mind but I will not spoil the surprise now.

JrTweety: Have you played basketball in school or somewhat professionally?

MET CLUB: No, only in the NBA.. the Newsted Basketball Association Northern California Chapter.

Jaymz666: How many tunes are going to be on the album? Master meets Black???

MET CLUB: More than 5, less than 50 approximately.

CPALee: Why did you choose bass guitar as your instrument of choice?

MET CLUB: It was Kiss, Gene Simmons!

Mtlmlitia: Hey Jason! what's up? 1.) What do think of the people who say that you don't belong in Metallica? When is Metallica going to play a gig in my backyard?

MET CLUB: Thank you... when you come up with the money and a younger sister.

BUDJUI: Who is going to produce the next album?

MET CLUB: Lars (Bob Rock) Ulrich.

MarkSowhat: Has their been any "creative tension" in the studio so far?

MET CLUB: No, only fun.

Stevene127: Has James finished writing lyrics yet? - What are the titles?

MET CLUB: Don't you mean started? Yes, a lot of working titles.

JessUM: Is the band going to be debuting any of the new tunes at the Molson gig?

MET CLUB: You just never know, do ya? ;)

MetalKaryn: Do you plan to tour for the next album as much as you did for the Black Album?

MET CLUB: Probably.

GOSHEN400: Hows about some hints to any meanings in the new songs,cats dogs,etc.... pleez :-) messages

MET CLUB: Social and domestic disputes with big hunks of wood.

Moviegal: Have you guys thought about who you would like to have open for you on the next tour?

MET CLUB: Yeah, Kyuss.

BREADFAN 9: Since my friends aren't here they told me to ask if you would like to invest in our band and do you like Offspring?

MET CLUB: Not especially, I don't dislike them, but I am not a fan or anything.....ask Kirk about investing.

Orion 8386: Where are you right now? What CD's are in your changer? Can you recommend some good blues albums?

MET CLUB: I am in the sunshine... Social Distortion, Soul Train Box Hits.. Terrance Trent D'arby's new one.. Kool and the Gang.. Pulp Fiction Soundtrack. These days it's good just to buy collections of blues, Albert King, Albert Collins..1960's Buddy Guy and BB King.

JrTweety: What do you think you would be doing (career wise) if you did not succeed in music?

MET CLUB: Trying to succeed in music

MetalKaryn: I think your hair loooks cool either way, but why did you cut it?

MET CLUB: A drunken bet with Lars Ulrich... you're really gonna like it now!

Jaymz666: What do you think of Flotsam's new album 'Drift'? How about jammin' with my band? Seriously!

MET CLUB: Good record.. great drumming. Where is your band?

Jaymz666: Illinois!

MET CLUB: Be more specific.

Jaymz666: Suburb of Chicago called Wonder Lake.

MET CLUB: I'll keep it in mind next time I'm there.

CPALee: People are always comparing you to Cliff - does this bother you? Why so or why not?

MET CLUB: No, it does not bother me..because he was taller and cooler.

BUDJUI: What do you like to do for recreation?...Besides music.

MET CLUB: Basketball , mountain biking and drums.

MarkSowhat: Do you know what kind of stage setup you guys will have for the next tour?

MET CLUB: It's going to be shaped in a big M for Mark and Metallica, Maybe.

Stevene127: What did Lars mean by the word "greasy" in Rolling Stone? Can you compare the term to any previous song?

MET CLUB: Yeah, like Sad But True vein.. I think that's what he meant.

Monte78: Are you gonna have a whole new sound on the new CD, or the same great Metallica we all love?

MET CLUB: It's going to be Metallica and it will sound like Metallica.

JHouhou403: How's the hair (or lack thereof) coming along!!!???

MET CLUB: Albert Einstien is my new role model for hairstyles.

JessUM: I hear your dad lives here in Lexington, KY, do you visit him often and how do you like Lexington?

MET CLUB: He used to have a place there, but he doesn't anymore.

GOSHEN400: How do you feel about fans following the next tour and in the future? Nomads, parasites,etc.

MET CLUB: I don't mind it at all, sort of a cool thing, the dedication and all the madness.

Moviegal: Will there still be a Snake Pit for the next tour? (If so, I'm there!)

MET CLUB: We're thinking at least one, hopefully!

OzOsbourne: How come no tracks from you On Nativity in Black or Kiss My Ass? I would suggest Love Gun.

MET CLUB: Just cause we don't do that kind of thing ;)

Orion 8386: What was the last concert you went to? How come your parts on AJFA are just mirrors of Jamyz' parts?

MET CLUB: Slayer. Because that was the mode at the time.

JrTweety: I'm going to be getting married, do you have any advice to give me? (By the way, I'm 21)

MET CLUB: Have a good time!

Jaymz666: Are you a fan of the Misfits? If so, what are your favorite tunes? About jammin', call me!!

MET CLUB: Yes, favorite is Legacy of Brutality and Earth AD

CPALee: Does the band need a new CPA?- I'm available...LOL... Seriously, what do your parents think about your choice of occupation?

MET CLUB: My parents are happy that I pursued a career that I truly desired.

BUDJUI: Any "new" bands that you particularly like?

MET CLUB: Monkey Planet...Sexoturica

Stevene127: Have the songs been from the long, accumulation of demo/riff tapes, or from very recent ideas?

MET CLUB: Both

Monte78: Stupid question.. What year is your Mustang and what kind of engine do you have in it? What are the chances James will call me?

MET CLUB: The red one is 67 fastback, 289 Hi-Pro...They say the chances are good..if you get enough Metalli-Members.

JHouhou403: Do you sing lead on any of the new songs on the new album?

MET CLUB: Yeah.. a bunch ;)

MET CLUB: Yes, I like them they are in my Cd player now.

MET CLUB: Probably Lars if their weapons are hot dogs.

HornedKing: Hey, Jason! What do you feel is your most acomplished song?

MET CLUB: One that you haven't heard yet

MetalLisa: I was fortunate to talk to you after a show last summer and you mentioned that y'all were near Mt. Tam Do you or the other guys get into hiking/backpacking?

MET CLUB: Yes, we are recording close to there...great biking, all outdoor activities.

KevinH4474: have you ever played Dyers Eve live? If so when/where? If not why? Will you play it next tour?

MET CLUB: We haven't yet!! Maybe someday, if we can remember it.

Fenderusr: What new countries will you be playing for this upcoming tour?

MET CLUB: Any that we can.

Boaris: Jason, when you are on tour how do you keep up with the rest of the world? Newspapers? TV?

MET CLUB: CNN and ever briefed by relentless tour management.

JDROP: Any story behind the Mustang? And can you tell us about the engine...?

MET CLUB: Got it from the fire chief of the town I live in.. and the engine is nothing really special.. 289 Hi-Po.

State97: In the future do you see Metallica as a landmark in metal? Do you think you will always have a big impact?

MET CLUB: I see them as a landmark now and hopefully for the duration.

DMConner: Who or what compelled you to do the IR8 thing? Anything like that on the new album?

MET CLUB: It just came about, I do side projects all of time and that one was exceptional. Not really any thing like it on new album.

W1A1S1P1: Hi Jason!! What made you decide to play bass instead of say Drums or Guitar

MET CLUB: Too many drummers and guitar players in this world already.

T Droopy: Jason will you sing on the album and what old Metallica album does the new one most sound like? What are some song names and album title?

MET CLUB: I will be singing, whether they record it or not is another story.. and it doesn't sound like any other Metallica album.

WIZARD1039: Hey Jason.. have you guys ever thought about starting up your own label?

MET CLUB: We just did, it's called Elektra ;)

METALMN432: Jason what do you think of Roanoke Virgina? Will you guys be here on tour?

MET CLUB: I think it's great!! And you know we'll be there man!!

EvilCarlos: Hey Jason! After ..Justice were you seriously considering quitting if the bass wasn't turned up?

MET CLUB: Yeah

B 0145: When in Michigan, do you ever come to Ann Arbor and what do you think of this city? Crisler is bigger than Wings and also know of any drummers this side of the state to be in my and JDrop's band?

MET CLUB: I haven't been to Ann Arbor in a long time. If Lars moves , I'll tell you.

NO1257: Do have any plans to ever record and release any of the jazz or blues you like to play sort of like the way the IR8 demo came out?

MET CLUB: Yes, someday...you'll be the first to know.

KELLCEE: Do you wear contact lenses, or do you only wear glasses? How come you don't wear your glasses all the time?

MET CLUB: I wear contacts... I don't wear the glasses because they fall off when I am on stage jammin' metal.

HornedKing: Do you keep in touch with other bands often? If so, which?

MET CLUB: Just a couple, Flotsam... Sepultura.. and the bassist from Buddy Guy's band.

MetalLisa: Will y'all be touring the US by next summer and will you offer after show passes to the club members like last year? (PLEASE?). It was really great that y'all did that.

MET CLUB: Yes and yes.

KevinH4474: WHY DID YOU SHAVE YOUR HEAD AND ARE YOU GROWING IT BACK???????????

MET CLUB: Cuz of a drunken bet with Kirk and it's growing back wildly.. a'la mad scientist.

Fenderusr: What new countries will you be playing on the upcoming tour?

MET CLUB: As many as we possibly can and that will let us in.

Boaris: Would you like to produce your own videos?Are you happy with your previous productions?

MET CLUB: I wouldn't know where to start and a few of them have been pretty cool.

JDROP: Before you joined the band, did you have a favorite tune? And if so, what was it?

MET CLUB: Whiplash.

State97: What is your favorite song to play live? I know James likes Thingy.

MET CLUB: Sanitarium... Sad But True.. Disposable Heroes

DMConner: How do you and the other guys feel about bootlegs? Do you or they collect any?

MET CLUB: Yes, we all collect them, Lars has the most... I think they are healthy, but I don't like to sign them, cause you never know what's on them.

W1A1S1P1: Everytime You guys play Seek and Destroy, James says you traded it for a case of ----- beer, how ---- was it??

MET CLUB: How ------ did the song sound? Say that six times.

T Droopy: What city do you think has the best crowd and who is producing new one and any big arguments?! Will another live album come out for next tour?

MET CLUB: Jakarta.....Lars (Bob Rock) Ulrich... All of the time... Anybody's guess right now.

METALMN432: What went on between you guys and Gn'R? Will you do another tour like that, double bill?

MET CLUB: Absolutely nothing... Anything is possible.

EvilCarlos: Is there a reason why you don't wear other band's t-shirts onstage anymore, like you used to? Are you gonna have a regular stage next time?

MET CLUB: I do still wear other bands t-shirts.... No, it will be irregular.

B 0145: You guys claim you can drink alot but I dunno, what is the most you ever drank? I had a streak of 70 beers in 100 hours earlier this month.

MET CLUB: We like to have a drink but that is insane!

NO1257: Ok,enough serious questions, here's what we REALLY want to know Jase: Boxers, briefs or bikinis?

MET CLUB: I switch...change is good.

KELLCEE: Which one member of Metallica would you say you have the closest friendship with?

MET CLUB: Ulrich

HornedKing: Are you guys done with the club-only release? When is it coming out?

MET CLUB: We are just finalizing details, look for info in SO WHAT.. it's gonna be cool!

MetalLisa: I think it's GREAT of y'all to do these chats with us. Do you or any of the guys get online from home?

MET CLUB: Kirk does alot, I get it in my studio.. I also check the message boards

KevinH4474: what will the drums be like this album? Will there be any double bass (please)?

MET CLUB: Too loud.. yes, a little double bass.

Fenderusr: Any plans on how long the next tour will be?

MET CLUB: Just Long enough.

Boaris: Would you like a llama for backpacking? I can deliver it (in person).

MET CLUB: Thanks, maybe later. We'll let you know... is it pretty?

JDROP: Any songs you'd like to see Metallica cover?

MET CLUB: Anything by Die Krupps.

State97: Kirk gave My dad permission to name a race horse "Master of Puppets" but said that the band got part of the winnings if it won the Kentucky Derby. How much do you want and how do we contact you?

MET CLUB: We want our pay in glue and dog food.. contact editor of SO WHAT.

DMConner: Are there any plans for another live medly? What?

MET CLUB: Sure, you bet ya!! Actually, it's going to be a live Elvis medley ;)

W1A1S1P1: At a show you guys did in Keene, NH 6/12/94 You were not feeling well, and if I remember right you did some singing after you came back on stage, what happened?

MET CLUB: I remember it well, it was a ugly neck deal.

T Droopy: Jason how can we be sure this is you? Could you come to my house?

METALMN432: Did you guys hang out in Roanoke? If so where what is your favorite place to hang out here?

MET CLUB: I really don't know.

EvilCarlos: Do you think Metallica will ever just end it all.. or will you keep going and going like Kiss?

MET CLUB: We will bow out gracefully , is my wish.

JamezHet: Ok, 1) Jason, did you get the amount of bass trax you wanted on this album?

MET CLUB: I am definately getting them, we have a great understanding now.

JamezHet: 2) Do you think the album will be released earlier with your progress?

MET CLUB: It will be released when we are done with it, there is still a lot of work to be done.

BSmith8319: What is your opinion on bootlegs & do you collect any of your own live performances?

MET CLUB: Yes, I do collect our own perfomances, we all do, Lars has the most. Bootlegs are healthy, but I don't like to sign them because you never know what is on it.

Joehvymtl : Will you be singing on the new album at all?

MET CLUB: Yes, I will sing very loudly but whether it gets on the album is another thing

MetalGirl8: How come you only contributed to one song on the new album & will it be out before Christmas?

MET CLUB: I contributed to every song on the new album... you mean Christmas '96??!!

Hammett69: Jason, I would like to say thanks for signing my guitar case backstage in Tampa, and is this album gonna be the best?

MET CLUB: You're welcome and absolutely!

JagerJ: Can you give us any possible song titles or ideas for the name of the new album?

MET CLUB: You'll see it first in SO WHAT!! but you are welcome to send in cool ideas!

WHedr1: After the Black album and tour Metallica established themselves as one of the great bands of all time. What goals.. personal or as a group do you have now?

MET CLUB: To stay there.. to maintain the integrity.

Metol: How many chicks do you guys get when you're on the road?

MET CLUB: not as many chicks as guys ;)

That Dude: Why did you cut your hair? Are you gonna grow the fro back? It was cool.

MET CLUB: I cut my hair in a drunken bet with James, and it is fro right now, very mad scientist looking!

BarbDwyer: Does Metallica consider "promoting" a band that's highly-deserving-yet-ignored-by-radio by taking it on tour?

MET CLUB: When it's our choice we always try to take bands we like irrespective of popularity.

PaulieMet: Are you still working on a side project with Jim Martin? I heard he formed new band Behemoth. Have you thought of getting married after going to the Andreas Kisser wedding?

MET CLUB: The side project was Fatso in spring of '94 and I have appeared with Jim's band live in the Bay area and yes, I've considered marrying Andreas.

MTLCA4EVER: Will you ever do a blues album, and do you like UK Wildcats b- ball?

MET CLUB: Yes, and hell yes!

CMKav: Any name for the new album yet?

MET CLUB: One Take Ulrich.. the OT trials!! ;).

Metalgdss: How is it that you are able to perform so many concerts per tour, and do so much, yet remain so nice?

MET CLUB: It's the calm professionalism of our tour manager and giant green buds from hell.

TudorRose: Have you heard the Mighty Mighty Bosstones version of Enter Sandman? If so, what did you think?

MET CLUB: Yes and it's cool

BSmith8319: What is the most creative present you have ever received from a fan?

MET CLUB: Anything from Japan.. garments.. hand made stuff.

Joehvymtl: You use 'Misery' in your solo a lot, it's a great song, will you ever play the whole song live?

MET CLUB: Ever? Yes

MetalGirl8: In the chat with Kirk he said you only contributed to one song thats why I asked :)

Hammett69: I had 2 guest passes when I bought my ESP KH-2 and my question is why did the security treat me like crap and could I go again?

MET CLUB: I don't handle security personally. Give a guy a uniform, it sometimes goes to their heads?

Crovel: What ever happened to that 3 song demo tape you handed out a while back? It was bitching.

MET CLUB: It's all over the place.

WHedr1: Do you (or did you ever) feel awkward playing the older Metallica songs?

MET CLUB: Maybe in the early years, but definitely not anymore.

That Dude: Do you have any strange body piercings? What's the most interesting thing that has been thrown at you?

MET CLUB: No, I leave the body modification to Kirk... a dart.

PaulieMet: What do think about MTV's lack of metal videos. Will they play your new ones? You're huge!!

MET CLUB: I think eMpTyV.

MTLCA4EVER: Do you like playing in Cincy, and who is your favorite football team?

MET CLUB: Yeah, we like playing in Cincy and I like the Lions and Raiders

CMKav: Any specific date on the release of the album?

MET CLUB: None whatsoever, probably '96.. everything is going really well and the new songs are huge.

JagerJ: When you were younger, when and where did you hear Metallica for the first time, and do you remember what song it was?

MET CLUB: I bought Kill 'Em All 2 weeks after it came out in Tempe AZ.. read about in Kerrang.

Metalgdss: What bass will you use live now, since you dropped Alembic?

MET CLUB: Probably Spector or ESP.

TudorRose: Any bass solos planned on the next album?

MET CLUB: Yeah, tons of them.. all over the shop

BarbDwyer: what do you think of King's X and Doug Pinnick's playing? Steve Morse? Muz Skillings?

MET CLUB: Pinnick's multi-string thing is very happening... Been a Steve Morse fan for many years...Skillings' stuff from Living Colour was cool..

BSmith8319: What do you find to do on tour just to get away from it all and remain semi-sane? Do you plan to tour as long again?

MET CLUB: You don't get away! You don't remain totally sane!! The next tour will be a really big one too.

Joehvymtl: Have you ever met Cindy Crawford? If so, what happened? Bet ya liked it if ya did. :-)

MET CLUB: Yes, we have all met her.. and Lars got a woody.

MetalGirl8: What do you think about the band HOLE? Since ya'll will be with them in September in Canada.

MET CLUB: I'd rather not think about it and I don't think about them.

Hammett69: Jason , do you really appreciate your fans, or are you in it for the money? Alot of people really belive in you.

MET CLUB: I really do appreciate our fans and the money is nice but it's not the reason I do it.

Crovel: What's some latest CDs you bought, and are you guys going to take Kyuss on the next tour through the states?

MET CLUB: Swans... Some old GBH.. Dead Kennedys..I would like to take Kyuss on tour.

WHedr1: I'm sure you know of the way you stomp during slow heavy tunes. Does the music make you do it or is it to make up for the inability to swirl your hair?

MET CLUB: Yes, the music makes me do it!!

Metol: what is your favorite color?

MET CLUB: Red.. no blue..aargggh!

PaulieMet: Hear any cool bands lately besides Metallica? Bought any new guitars lately and what kind?

MET CLUB: New Kyuss...White Zombie... bought some Tobias basses.

MTLCA4EVER: My 9 year old cousin plays guitar, any advice for him?

MET CLUB: Saturate your brain with all music.
